Boston Tea Party to open in Plymouth’s Sutton Harbour
Boston Tea Party (BTP) is hoping to open a new café-bar in Sutton Harbour in the heart of Britain’s Ocean City as part of a widespread regeneration of Plymouth’s prime waterfront district.
The popular chain plans to move into the historic Jamaica House on Vauxhall Street, which also borders Exchange Street, and open in the Grade II listed building in June 2015, subject to securing listed planning consent.

The BTP venue would accommodate 150 guests inside the detached three-storey stone building with seating for a further 30 people created outside, overlooking the historic harbour towards the Barbican.
Sam Roberts, Managing Director of BTP, said: “We’ve been operating across the South West for a number of years and Plymouth has been in our thoughts for a while.
“We’ve been searching for suitable locations and buildings, and Sutton Harbour fits the bill perfectly. It’s a great part of the city, with bags of character and history and we’re excited to be furthering regeneration of the waterfront by moving into Jamaica House, subject to listed planning consent being agreed. We hope it will be a space for the locals to come and enjoy anything from a coffee or a bite to eat to a craft ale or glass of wine.”
BTP has signed an agreement with the building’s owners, Sutton Harbour Holdings plc, for a lease, subject to the chain successfully achieving the necessary planning consents for Jamaica House.
The news is a further boost to Sutton Harbour Holdings plc’s ongoing work to regenerate Plymouth’s waterfront in line with the city’s aspirations to become well-known as Britain’s Ocean City, and follows approval in February of the company’s plans to create a £3million boardwalk in the harbour, providing a pedestrian link over the water from Vauxhall Quay to Guy’s Quay.
The new BTP venue would join popular Westcountry craft cider and gourmet pizza restaurant The Stable, which is opening a new branch in March in the former Vauxhall Quay bar off Little Vauxhall Street.
Charlotte Malcolm, Commercial Marketing Manager for Sutton Harbour Holdings plc, said: “Sutton Harbour is fast becoming a must-visit food and drink destination with The Stable, and now potentially Boston Tea Party, providing a very welcome addition to the wide range of first-class restaurants, cafes and bars already here.
“The lively waterfront culture around the harbour and the Barbican offers successful chains like BTP a unique location to move straight into, and this new cafe planned for the historic Jamaica House building would provide another fantastic venue for people in Plymouth to enjoy.”
The Jamaica House building, formerly used for many years as the Barbican Antiques Centre, would need to be renovated by the BTP chain before the new venue could open in June.
